Mulch Calculator Guide
Calculate how much mulch your beds need and convert the required volume into the number of bags to buy.
Open calculatorMeasure first. The formula does the rest.
Use consistent units for every measurement. Keep the original values precise; only round the final quantity you plan to buy.

This is an interactive example, not a replacement for checking the material manufacturer's specifications.
How the calculation works
Bags = (Area × Depth × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Bag volume
Measure the bed length and width and decide the desired mulch depth.
Calculate volume and add the selected waste allowance.
Divide by your bag size and round up to a whole bag.
Before you buy
- ✓Measure depth in several places because garden beds are rarely perfectly level.
- ✓Use the exact bag volume printed on the product.
- ✓A deeper layer is not always better; follow the planting or product guidance for your use.
Common questions
What mulch depth should I use?
It depends on the material and planting. Use the depth recommended for your project rather than copying a universal number.
Why are bags rounded up?
You cannot buy part of a bag, so the purchase quantity is rounded up.
Can I use cubic yards instead?
The core calculation is volume-based and can be converted, but always compare like-for-like bag or bulk volumes.
