How the calculation works
Weight = Volume × Density
Measure the area length, width and compacted depth.
Calculate volume and add your chosen waste allowance.
Multiply the final volume by the gravel density to estimate weight.
Before you buy
- ✓Use the supplier density when available; gravel density varies by type and moisture.
- ✓Check whether your supplier sells by tonne, kilogram or cubic yard.
- ✓For driveways and paths, account for the required compacted depth.
Common questions
Why is gravel weight only an estimate?
Different gravel types, particle sizes and moisture levels have different bulk densities. The calculator therefore exposes density as an editable input.
What density should I use?
Use the supplier value when possible. The default is only a practical starting estimate.
Can I calculate tonnes?
Yes. The calculator shows kilograms; divide by 1,000 for metric tonnes.
